Extensive studies have been undertaken in the NWT to determine the age of a Lake Trout. Though Lakers grow slowly in the cold waters of the north, they compensate for slow grow by having an incredible long life spans of 40 – 70 years. Studies have shown a Laker 24″ is 20 years old!
Northern Pike grow slower in the cold waters of the north as well. Similar studies show a 10 year old pike can grow to 29″ compares to 40″ in the warm waters in the south.
These studies emphasize the importance of practicing safe catch and release.
